Value Line rates the Financial Strength of more than 5,000 companies in our universe for which sufficient information is available from A++ (strongest) to C (weakest). A company’s relative position depends on its balance sheet leverage, business risk, level and direction of profits, cash flow, earned returns, cash, corporate size, and stock price. For more information, please see Financial Strength in our glossary of financial terms.
Every stock chosen for analyst coverage is hand selected by a team of senior analysts. The team focuses on relatively large companies with a set of parameters that indicate ample float and adequate liquidity. Our analysts also consider profitability, dividends, market niche, investor interest and near- and long-term growth prospects. But even with such broad criteria, choosing a specific stock is more of an art than a science. That’s why only our senior analysts are allowed to select stocks.
Value Line’s industry groupings are unique. We’ve developed our own industry classification system that allows us to classify similar stocks in an efficient and meaningful way. At this time, our analysts track the most actively traded stocks on the U.S. Exchanges in more than 90 industries. Occasionally, we’ll create new industry classifications to accommodate changing market conditions and technological innovations.
The amount of data available to you depends on your subscription package. All digital packages give you at least one year of data across almost all categories, access to our classic PDF reports and up to 10 years of data in select categories. Our professional packages offer access to up to 10 years of history across all proprietary data, and full access to our classic PDF reports archive. Value Line also offers a data feed that includes annual data from 1955 onward, and quarterly data from 1963 to the present. The Small Cap Investor package covers stocks in approximately 90 industries
Value Line tracks more than 90 industries.
Value Line analysts cover the most actively traded stocks on the U.S. Exchanges.
Approximately 1,700 small- and mid-cap stocks are included in the Small Cap Investor package.
Each analyst covered stock in the Value Line universe is updated in detail four times per year. However, when important news occurs between our scheduled updates, we release Research Notes, which can be issued at any time. You’ll find Research Notes on our website in the Commentary module on the Company View page. In our classic print products, you’ll find the updates in the back of each week’s publication.
Value Line’s analysts devote an immense amount of time evaluating stocks to provide you with unbiased, world-class research. To ensure that your questions get the attention they deserve, please email questions to vlresearch@valueline.com and we’ll reply as soon as possible.
We welcome feedback including coverage requests from our subscribers. If you have a request, we will try to accommodate your wishes if the stock meets our analytical criteria. Even when a stock meets our criteria, there are many factors that affect the timing of adding it to our coverage. Please email your requests to vlresearch@valueline.com.
First, it must trade on the NYSE, NASDAQ, or the Toronto Stock Exchange. Second, its stock price should be at least $1.00 per share. Third, its market capitalization has to be less than $10 billion. And finally, it should be actively traded, and compete in one of the industries that Value Line covers.
The data on these 1,700 companies contains analyst commentaries and forecasts, as well as Timeliness™ and Safety™ Ranks for each stock covered, along with other proprietary measures. It includes most of the large caps, and also contains large numbers of small- and mid-caps. Our universe of approximately 1,700 small- and mid-cap companies is focused solely on small- and mid-cap equities. You’ll find a Safety Rank, and, rather than a Timeliness Rank, you’ll find a Performance Rank for each of these stocks. Unlike the analyst covered companies, no commentaries or forecasts by dedicated Value Line analysts are provided for the stocks in this group. A consensus forecast by other firm analysts is provided to you where available. To learn more about equities subscription packages, go here.
Some digital subscription packages include hundreds of fields of historical data, from proprietary ranks, ratings, estimates and projections, to market data, income statement, balance sheet and cash flow statement data, capital and equity structure data, and institutional ownership and insider transactions. To learn more, dial 1-800-VALUELINE (1-800-825-8354) or for institutional packages 1-800-531-1425
Many of our customers prefer to buy stock in companies of a particular size. One of the most common ways to determine this is by market capitalization. Commonly known as “market cap”, it is calculated by multiplying a stock’s current price by the number of shares outstanding. Value Line considers stocks with a market cap of below $1 billion to be small-cap; $1 billion to $5 billion are mid-cap; and greater than $5 billion are large-cap. The distribution of company sizes in our universe of 1,700 analyst covered companies at this time is 62% Large-Cap, 31% Mid-Cap and 6% Small-Cap.
Our analysts are continuously monitoring news feeds for information that could be valuable to our subscribers. When an important story breaks that we think significantly affects a stock we are covering, we write a Research Note (formerly called Supplementary Report). These Notes include the new information and our revised analysis of the company’s prospects in light of it, along with our revised analysis of the stock’s investment merits. These Notes are posted on our website in the stock’s “Commentary” module. Classic Print customers will find these updates in the Supplementary Reports section in the back of each week’s printed issue of The Value Line Investment Survey®.
There are a variety of reasons why the proprietary Value Line ranks for a company may be suspended. Some among them are that the company has filed for bankruptcy, is the target of a pending acquisition, or hasn’t filed the necessary reports with the SEC.
On our Company View page in the Browse Research section, you can access quotes and other data on approximately 6,000 North American securities. If you are searching for a stock not included in our database, you’ll be directed to a standard results page. We present this page based on publically available data we gather from reliable sources; it does not include proprietary content we generate.
We may cancel coverage if a company is about to be acquired, delisted, or has filed for bankruptcy – or simply to make room for a stock that we think is more appropriate for our service.
Yes, depending on your subscription package, we make available reports with detailed statistical information on up to 20,000 funds. We also provide a model portfolio of mutual funds drawn from major investment categories.

The Select report identifies the type of investor who may be most interested in each stock selection (i.e., aggressive or conservative, income oriented, multi-year- or intra-year-holding period). We avoid highly risky stocks. However, it is up to you to determine the wisdom of buying or selling shares of a recommended stock according to your own investment objectives.
